Zend Studio for Eclipse Released
On January 22, 2008 Zend Technologies, Inc. released Zend Studio for Eclipse 6, a new IDE for the PHP programming language. It is the successor to Zend Studio 5, and as the name implies, is built on top of the Eclipse IDE framework. Unless you have been programming in a cave somewhere, you already know that in the last few years Eclipse has grown to become the most popular and powerful programming environment on the planet. Eclipse has an open plug-in architecture, and Zend has created a set of PHP plug-ins that draw upon the power the Eclipse framework offers.
Zend Studio for Eclipse Features
Zend Studio for Eclipse supports local and remote debugging, profiling, and unit testing. Features Eclipse users have come to expect like CVS, and Subversion, as well as SQL database integration and query tools, are included. The Zend Framework and a library of code templates are also part of the package. Code hints and code completion are supported in the editor, and the PHP help reference is just a click away. The list of new features is too large to mention here.
The Zend Studio for Eclipse package includes Eclipse. You just install it and run. You do not need to go through the process of installing a lot of additional plug-ins into your existing Eclipse installation. The entire package is rather large, weighing in at just over 275MB. That’s about the same size as some other popular integrated Eclipse packages like MyEclipse. The price of Zend Studio for Eclipse is listed as $399, but at the time of this writing, the price was discounted to $299.
Conclusion
If you’re an existing Zend Studio user, and like Eclipse (really now, what’s not to like?), switching to Zend Studio for Eclipse is basically a no-brainer. As the Zend Studio for Eclipse platform matures we can expect this one to get better and better. Congratulations Zend. Good move! No kudos for green ball logo.
