Business Intelligence Roadmap

If you are looking for a book that describes the process of implementing a Business Intelligence project, authors Larissa Moss and Shaku Atre have done an excellent job. Their book Business Intelligence Roadmap: The Complete Project Lifecycle for Decision-Support Applications describes a ground plan for BI from a vendor neutral perspective. With the number of BI offerings that are available, each touting their own style, it’s refreshing to finally get an outlook that focuses on managing the project over selling specific features. This book certainly fills that void.

Developing a successful full-scale BI application calls for involvement from a diverse groups of stakeholders that slice broadly across an organization. The book walks the reader through the analysis, design, construction, and deployment phases giving a clear-cut guide of prototypes, activities, roles, deliverables, and risks that are faced at each stage. Recommendations for parallel activities, dos and don’ts, helpful hits, and organizational advice are interdispersed throughout.

The highly organized, structural approach of the book is a lesson in itself. The inclusion of detailed roles and task matrix charts makes the book a professional tool. The language is surprisingly free of technical jargon making it easy to understand, and interesting to read. Definitely recommended to anyone managing or developing Business Intelligence applications. — James Clark
