Data Mining is part of the Business Intelligence process. Data Mining is centered on the extraction and analysis of useful information from large data sets. Data mining uses an extensive collection of techniques and algorithms, including statistics and artificial intelligence approaches, and also pattern recognition and machine learning.

One goal of data analysis is to discover the underlying data patterns that can reveal the variables that govern the dynamics of a process. This phase is called knowledge discovery. Once the variables have been identified, they are modeled, and a simulation is constructed. An accurate model simulates the dynamics of the system and allows what-if variations to be tested, and the systems behavior predicted.
